How to use the time duration calculator
Find the exact duration between two clock times, including a shift or event that crosses midnight.
Formula or method
Both times are converted to minutes. When the end is earlier than the start, 24 hours are added to the end.
Worked examples
A normal work period
9:15 AM to 5:45 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes.
An overnight shift
10:00 PM to 6:00 AM is treated as crossing midnight and equals 8 hours.
A short appointment
2:20 PM to 3:05 PM equals 45 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Can the end time be earlier than the start time?
Yes. The calculator treats that as an overnight duration ending the following day.
Does it subtract lunch or other breaks?
No. Use Work Hours or Break Deduction when unpaid breaks need to be removed.
Can it calculate more than 24 hours?
This tool compares two clock times within one daily or overnight period. Use Add or Subtract Time for longer durations.
Why is the answer also useful in decimal hours?
Decimal hours can be multiplied directly by an hourly rate or entered into many payroll systems.
Limitations
The tool calculates one continuous duration and does not subtract breaks.
