Common mistakes with decimal hours
Reading 8.30 as 8:30
8.30 decimal hours is 8 hours 18 minutes. 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.50. At $20 an hour, mixing them up costs $4 per shift.
Adding times as decimals
7:45 + 8:30 is not 15.75. Convert first: 7.75 + 8.50 = 16.25 hours, or 16 hours 15 minutes.
Rounding too early
Convert the weekly total once instead of rounding every shift. Rounding each shift to 0.1 hour can drift by several minutes over a week.
