How to use the overtime pay calculator
Use this calculator after confirming which hours qualify for overtime and which multiplier applies. It separates ordinary earnings from premium overtime earnings so the estimate is easy to verify.
Formula
Regular pay = regular hours × hourly rate. Overtime pay = overtime hours × hourly rate × multiplier. Total gross pay is the sum.
Worked examples
Five hours at time-and-a-half
At $25 per hour, 40 regular hours equal $1,000 and five overtime hours at 1.5× equal $187.50. Total gross pay is $1,187.50.
Four hours of double time
At $20 per hour, four hours at 2× add $160 in overtime pay.
Mixed overtime rates
Calculate time-and-a-half and double-time hours separately when both rates apply, then add the results.

US overtime rules in brief
The federal Fair Labor Standards Act requires overtime at 1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek for non-exempt employees. The workweek is a fixed, repeating 7-day period. Hours aren't averaged across two weeks, so 30 hours one week and 50 the next still means 10 overtime hours, even on a biweekly paycheck.
Some states add daily overtime. California, for example, generally pays 1.5× after 8 hours in a day and 2× after 12 hours, in addition to weekly overtime. Employees classified as exempt, often salaried professionals and managers, generally aren't entitled to federal overtime.
The regular rate includes more than base pay
Non-discretionary bonuses, such as attendance or production bonuses, and shift differentials are generally included in the regular rate used for overtime. Someone paid $20 an hour plus a $2 night differential has a regular rate of $22, so their overtime rate is $33, not $30.
Overtime rules by state
Some states add their own rules on top of federal law. California, for example, pays daily overtime and double time. Use a state calculator to apply your state's rules automatically:
Frequently asked questions
Does overtime always start after 40 hours?
No. Thresholds vary by jurisdiction, occupation, contract and employee classification.
Can this calculate double time?
Yes. Select the 2× multiplier and enter only the hours paid at that rate.
Are taxes included?
No. Results are gross estimates before taxes, benefits and deductions.
Does this determine legal eligibility?
No. Confirm eligibility and current rules with an official labor authority or qualified adviser.
How is time and a half calculated?
Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5. At $20 an hour, overtime pays $30 an hour, so 5 overtime hours add $150.
Is overtime calculated per day or per week?
Under federal law, per workweek: hours over 40 in a 7-day workweek. Some states, such as California, also require daily overtime.
Can two weeks be averaged to avoid overtime?
No. Under federal rules, each workweek stands alone, even when you are paid every two weeks.
Assumptions and limitations
Results depend on the values entered and are educational estimates. Pay figures exclude taxes, deductions and benefits. Workplace rules, rounding practices and legal requirements vary by location and employer.
