How to use the salary to hourly calculator

Use this calculator to compare a salaried job with an hourly role, estimate the value of reduced hours, or translate an annual offer into familiar pay periods. Enter the hours and weeks you actually expect to work so the result reflects your schedule.

Formula

Hourly pay = annual salary ÷ working weeks per year ÷ hours worked per week.

Worked examples

$50,000 salary at 40 hours a week

$50,000 ÷ 52 ÷ 40 is about $24.04 per hour. The same salary is about $961.54 per week and $4,166.67 per month.

$72,000 salary with two unpaid weeks

$72,000 ÷ 50 ÷ 40 equals $36 per working hour. Using 50 weeks instead of 52 changes the hourly comparison without changing the annual salary.

Part-time salary example

A $36,000 salary across 30 hours and 52 weeks equals about $23.08 per hour.

Quick rule of thumb: halve the annual salary and drop the thousands to estimate the hourly rate. $60,000 becomes about $30 an hour (the exact figure is $28.85).

Comparing a salaried job with an hourly job

Count the hours you really work

A $70,000 salary is $33.65 an hour at 40 hours a week, but only $26.92 at 50 hours. Salaried roles that routinely run long can pay less per hour than an hourly role with overtime.

Paid time off

Salary usually includes paid holidays and vacation. An hourly job with no paid leave needs a higher rate to match: covering 11 holidays and 10 vacation days takes roughly 8.8% more per hour (2,080 ÷ 1,912 hours).

Overtime eligibility

Many salaried employees are exempt from overtime under federal law, while hourly employees usually earn 1.5 times their rate after 40 hours in a workweek. Ask how a role is classified before comparing offers.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use 52 working weeks?

Use 52 when paid leave is included in the salary. Use fewer weeks when comparing only weeks actually worked.

Is the result before or after tax?

It is a gross conversion unless the annual amount you enter is already take-home pay.

Does monthly pay equal four weekly checks?

No. A year averages 4.33 weeks per month, so annual salary is divided by 12 for monthly pay.

Does this include benefits or bonuses?

No. Add recurring bonuses to annual salary if appropriate, and evaluate benefits separately.

How many work hours are in a year?

2,080 hours at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. In 2027 there are 261 weekdays, which is 2,088 hours at 8 hours a day.

Is $25 an hour good compared with a salary?

$25 an hour at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is $52,000 a year. Compare it with the salary after accounting for paid leave, benefits and overtime.

How do I convert an hourly rate back to a salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by 2,080 for a full-time year. $30 an hour × 2,080 = $62,400.

Assumptions and limitations
